steely jam the most faithful Steely Dan tribute band on the planet!
Always the thinking man’s band, Steely Dan created a sound and sensibility that changed the music world forever. Steely Jam doesn’t just recreate the sounds of Steely Dan. They bring it to life with all the polish, style, musicianship and wry wit that makes the music so irresistible.
Steely Jam pays homage to the sound, the sense of humor and sophisticated social satire that Fagen and Becker created. The members of Steely Jam are all Dan scholars—steeped in the r&b, the soul, the rock and the jazz that drives the music. It all comes together with performances that are in the truest sense, tributes. Steely Jam is:
Michael Lamper - Lead Vocals David Robin - Drums Ron Mendoza - Keyboards Doug Fischer - Guitars Paul Burkhart - Guitars Adam Levy - Bass Stacie Gibbs - Vocals Amanda Barnett - Vocals Jason Singer - Tenor Sax Rachelle Romeo - Alto Sax
Michael Lamper If fronting a band is an art form, fronting a Steely Dan band is high art. The songs are great stories, full of evocative, hilarious characters like Kid Charlemagne, Dr Wu, Josie, Janie Runaway, the Gaucho Amigo, Cousin Dupree, Peg, Lonnie the Kingpin, a hostage taker, a giddily lascivious uncle…
Michael brings audiences into this world with a joy and charm that leaves the room screaming for more. His powerful, graceful, melodic voice provides the cannon fodder, while his sense of humor pulls the trigger. Handsome, talented and hilarious don’t come together too often, but Michael Lamper has it all, and he uses every last ounce of it in bringing the songs, their characters and stories to life.
David Robin Steely Dan created some of the greatest grooves ever heard. Notorious for squeezing every last ounce of funk out of the best drummers in the world, when you play Dan tunes, the beat bar is as high as it gets.
David Robin is more than up to the task. A native of drizzly, rainy London, David moved to sunny Los Angeles in the 80s, and discovered that you can indeed check out any time you like, but you will never, ever leave. An accomplished rock, jazz and funk drummer, David is the soulful engine of Steely Jam. The grooves that David lays down will either get you up and on your feet, or you don’t have feet.
Ron Mendoza You can’t just sit down and play this stuff, you have to live it. And Ron has been here before. A veteran of several Steely Dan bands, Ron knows this material better than just about anybody on the planet. A schooled, soulful keyboardist, Ron brings to life the inimitable Donald Fagen style.
Adam Levy Where there is groove, there must be bass. In this case it’s Adam Levy. Adam studied jazz in the hallowed halls of the University of South Florida, then set off for New York and later Los Angeles. In both of those small towns Adam has for years been in demand as a session and live bassist, playing with a list of artists as long as your arm.
Doug Fischer and Paul Burkhardt Playing guitar in a Steely Dan band is a sacred trust. The guitarists who graced these records are a who’s who of the instrument. Denny Dias, Skunk Baxter, Elliot Randall, Walter Becker, Larry Carlton, Hugh McCracken, Wayne Krantz, Dean Parks… Their varied influences created a unique style. And the performances, those quirky, unforgettable solos, are as familiar and beloved as the songs themselves.
Steely Jam Musical Director Doug Fischer and Paul Burckhardt carry that torch proudly. Both studied jazz, Paul at University of Santa Clara, Doug at Berklee College of Music, honed by years of studio and live work in New York and Los Angeles to their credit. You can hear Doug and Paul’s influences in every solo, from rock to blues to funk to jazz to soul to r&b.
Amanda Barnett and Stacie Gibbs Steely Dan songs are stories, narratives. And as such, require a suitable Greek chorus. Amanda and Stacy grace the Steely Dan stage with harmony at once elegant and powerful. Both accomplished recording artists in their own right, they are the perfect complement to Michael Lamper’s dramatic presence.
When freedom is declared in My Old School, Amanda and Stacy sound the charge. When the Babylon Sisters shake it, they do the honors. And when Michael ruefully bemoans his lot in Hey Nineteen, Amanda and Stacy are there to make it all better with the Cuervo Gold and the fine Columbian.
Jason Singer and Rachelle Romeo The Steely Jam horn section is a marriage made in heaven. Rachelle Romeo (Alto Sax) is a highly sought after multi-instrumentalist and a respected and much sought after veteran of the San Francisco and Los Angeles jazz and blues scenes. Jason Singer (Tenor Sax) cut his teeth in the Chicago blues scene, and the deep dish pizza can be heard in every note. Jason has played extensively in the Chicago, New York and Los Angeles blues, funk and r&b scenes, and is a veteran of many recordings by artists from those burgs. www.steelyjam.com
